Moving away from fear to Trust

I love horses and the freedom of this photo. In this particular shot, the white horse is blind and follows his friend. Rather than dispose of the poor animal, the rancher decided to keep him after discovering another horse would not leave him stranded. I have found out the distance traveled from fear and doubt to trust is a difficult one. Not many succeed. We often face times in life when we feel overwhelmed by circumstances. It doesn't always take a tragedy for us to feel helpless and reluctant to continue. Suffering comes in many ways, sometimes without warning. No matter what the struggle, we can feel numbed by the experience and unable to think of continuing on. It is easy to trust when everything is going well. One thing I have learnt in the last couple of years: there aren't many guarantees in life. An ethic of risk always involves trust. What does this mean?
In our work places throughout the nation with the impact of corporate greed; the faith of honesty conflicts with the doubt of stealing. In our homes, the faith of honesty struggles with the faith of lying. In our world with the real threats of terrorists, the faith of honesty struggles with the doubt of those who would wage war on us. In our very worship, the faith in a God we cannot see struggles with the doubt of existence. Doubt's struggle with faith is good. It can lead to deeper growth and trust. I think God is worthy of our trust even in the most difficult of situations - in the winds of change, the earthquakes of despair, the fire of separation! Somewhere in the small whispering sound we can move from doubt to faith to faith again and again! We need to follow those who would not lead us astray. Listen to the rustle of the leaves, the wind and the feel of the sun. Like so many in our history from Peter to Elijah to Jesus; from Mohammed to Siddhartha, we continue to row together hard and steady against the wind of the world that threatens to blow us off course. For Christians, the only way our little faith and trust will grow stronger is to remember a savior is in the boat with us. Think of tha photo with a blind horse following the lead of another he trusts! The issue with trust is to use the resources God gives us, especially in those around us who care!
