"Holi" is celebrated every Spring among Hindus. It is known as "Phagwa" in Trinidad where I grew up. I was pleasantly surprised by these images. I had forgotten how much fun we had with our Hindu friends back home.
In 1845, Hindus from Bihar, India, came to my homeland as indentured labourers for the sugarcane fields. They enjoyed their Phagwa on a smaller scale. Today it is celebrated with colours, songs, music and dance. A variety of water colours are mixed and sprayed on all those who participate in the festivity. Hard feelings are washed away with these coloured waters of Holi according to Hindu beliefs.
The playful time of Holi is stress free. With a dholak (hand drum) and majeera (cymbals), let us join our Hindu friends across the globe. Animosity is forgotten and forgiven as we adopt the heart and mind of a child. Such play is not competitive!
It serves one simple purpose: our enjoyment!
What a wonderful concept- to wash away our hard feelings, animosity, etc. and to bring in a renewed spirit. To create enjoyment and forgiveness in this troublesome and modern society is sorely needed worldwide. If we can really learn from this festival, the world will be a happy place. Thanks for making us aware our senses and other cultural customs.
ReplyDeletewith color, with charm, the song of many happy voices, brightly colored water strewn affectionately in a festival of love, childlike playfulness; what a privileged part of Trini culture.
DeleteThanks, Dom Ron, what a lovely concept and you express it so well.
