The Red Thread

According to an old Chinese proverb when children are born, a red thread connects them to all the people who will be important in their lives. As the child grows older, the thread grows shorter, drawing the child closer to those people. It was my father's wish that I would know Mandarin and his culture; but, my mother's determination for me to immerse myself in her Creole-Spanish-Cantonese roots won the day. In the end, I grew to love all of them.
I want to believe that red thread binding me to them is of love, hope and courage. I am grateful. +Don Ronaldo.
